The Craft

July 16th, 2006

A couple of weeks ago I glanced upon the 1996 film, The Craft. I was immediately drawn to the fact Neve Campbell was in the credits list. Still, that wasn’t going to stop me watching it :p. Ok, seriously, I didn’t actually see the credits list but whatever, it was a joke.

Anyway, the movie revolves around Sarah arriving at a new school and soon finding herself hanging around with the freak crowd. The freaks being three other girls, Bonnie, Rochelle and Nacy who are one person short of really getting their covern going.

Once Sarah is around they begin to get somewhere with their powers but getting everything you want can really come back to bite you in the ass, times three according to Wicca.

The film moves along at a decent pace although seems a bit non-targetted at times. Something is happening but is there really a point to it? Indeed the whole film seems a bit murky. Perhaps they decided they wanted to make a film about witches but didn’t really know what was going on.

That’s not to say it’s a generic un-researched brain dead piece of work which bares no relation to the material it is trying to portray, there is signs of that in that. How accurate some of the rituals shown in it are I’m not sure but certainly a basic knowledge of the subject is evident.

In conclusion, an alight film, kept me entertained and worth a watch if you have an interest in the whole area. But not something you’re really missing out on.

Saw 3 - seriously, no

May 27th, 2006

Bad Lionsgate films! You guys have to stop making Saw sequels. The first one was a good movie. It wasn’t massively ground breaking as people said it was. Don’t get me wrong it was a very good movie but it won’t go down in history alongside Blair Witch Project. But as a stand alone it should have some legacy. And then they sequeled it. And now they are doing it again. Stop!

There is hope for Resident Evil 3

May 20th, 2006

Milla Jovovich has made some interesting comments about the upcoming third Resident Evil movie. She said that a lot of the exposions, action, etc from the second one was studio enforced and the third one won’t be like that which hopefully translates into “it’s going to be about the horror like it should be.”

Silent Hill

May 6th, 2006

I’ve been talking about Silent Hill quite a bit recently. Mainly because I was expecting a really kick-ass movie. Well, it was pretty kick-ass! It wasn’t the greatest movie I have ever seen but then again that is true of every movie except one (the one that was the greatest movie I have ever seen, to be honest I’m not really sure which one that is).

So yeah, while I haven’t played the game much I’m reliabily informed it sticks quite closely to the game’s storyline so fans of the game will have something to look forward to and from my point of view as a fairly un-knowledable consumer of the Silent Hill franchise, I can say that it’s a good movie for those who haven’t played the game too.

It’s fairly scary. It’s more creepy than scarry. I wasn’t really scared but there were people in the cinema that it did scare. Two of them were sat next to me :p. It was scary enough to make them scream at certain points. The creepyness it what Silent Hill was really all about though and while it doesn’t have the invisible evil that really makes a good horror (you see the bad guys) it was still very creepy.

The storyline really comes together at the end. Maybe I should have spotted it earlier but I didn’t fully understand until it was all laid out. Not that it was blindingly obvious then though, I still got questions which were mostly along the lines of “huh? I was following it up until the end.”

But yeah, good movie. Take people who get scared by creepyness, it really gets the atmosphere going :D.
